The locking of android 3.0 source code sees a natural outcome for the swarming android 2.2 and android 2.3 tablets. Not necessarily a frustrating thing! It would be better to usher in an android 3.0 tablet era preceded with stable and mature android Froyo and Gingerbread tablet PCs. After all, android 3.0 hasn’t demonstrated its potentiality due to the hindrances of corresponding apps and software.

The tablet I focus on today is encore an android 2.2 tablet powered by an 800MHz Freescale iMX515 processor. It comes with a portable 7 ‘’size with a capacitive touchscreen of resolution 800*480. The standard specs for this tablet, codenamed as FS701, will include integrated 3G module sporting voice call. But since what I get is simply a demo unit and there is only an empty SIM card slot preserved for the absent module.

FS701 feels quite sleek in the back though nothing special with 3 physical buttons embedded in the front, not sticking out but at the same surface with their peripherals. The same inconspicuous are the three buttons in the button for volume up and down, power which come as part of the metal frame all around. Ports concentrate in the right side, including microSD card slot, a miniUSB, HDMI output, a DC plug-in, and earphone jack and a preserved sim card slot aforementioned.

After switching on the tablet, a dynamic Milky Way animation as background draws my attention enough. The icons on apps menu look a little different from what we usually know, appearing quite neat at first sight but lacking of diversification and uniqueness. The Arabic number 1 stands a little abrupt in the middle of the first row of apps. If you swipe left to the next page, and this digit will change to 2, indicating all the apps are placed in two pages instead of one. But it is a little superfluous, since so many people would know swipe up or left to see more apps.

The apps preinstalled on the apps are common and most frequently-used ones, but I can’t see any games preloaded, no Angry Bird or G-sensor related games. So I skip this routine. I jump to the video playback testing. As we know, Freescale iMX515 chipsets are notable for sporting stable and smooth video streaming. It takes me a while to load on the online video page due to my weak Wifi signals, or you know for some other reasons. Relatively speaking, Freescale iMX515 enables the same level of video decoding capacities as Samsung PV210, better than RK2818 and Infotmic chipsets both in online flash and HD videos playback.

The capacitive touch will not offend you in most cases due to its natural sensitive responses and delicate feel, but you know sometimes it loses as well and do not follow your orders. But anyway, a capacitive touchscreen is always better than a resistive one in general.

If possible, we wish that we didn’t have to charge our tablet PC with a sound time span, say for several days, but you know how slim the possibilities are. The tablet has only a very ordinary battery. You need to thrust in a power supply if you keep using it with wifi on and video playback for only several hours.

But anyway, FS701 has the portability of a 7’’ size, the sound online flash playback of android 2.2, an overall fluent performance of Freescale iMX515 and an affordable price.
