Renesas M7003B Review: ARM Cortex A9 Dual-Core Android 2.2 Capacitive Tablet

Renesas M7003B initially draws my attention simply because it is connected with the diction that I am concerned with: Cortex A9, dual-core tablet, android 2.2, capacitive multitouch. So it is my anticipation to see a very impressive overall performance on a dual-core tablet PC. But the truth is that you cannot expect too much when the frequencies for the single core are only 533MHz. Anyway, it still has something worth mentioning considering its very affordable price.
The specs for Renesas M7003B include ARM Cortex A9 dual core processor with 533MHz for single core, android 2.2, 512 MB of DDR 2, 4 GB of nand storage up to 32 GB with microSD card expansion, a 3MP camera, 7’’ capacitive touchscreen with 800*480 resolution, internal Wifi, Bluetooth.
It comes with a very weird allocation of colors, which makes it distinguishable from other tablet PCs. The screen is surrounded by some narrow black frame with the rest in white color, part of the front, the four sides and the back. Four touch keys and a camera on the right part. Not like other tablet PCs with all ports concentrated on the right side, Renesas M7003B has its ports placed not so crowded.
The ports on the right side are an earphone jack, a miniUSB, a HDMI output, and a DC plug-in.

There is a docking station port, a microSD card slot and a sim card slot. This sim card is empty and preserved for the 3g module, since the 3G-enabled version will come out soon.
On the top part are three buttons for Power, volume up and down. The two relatively small speaks are laid on the left side instead of in the back.

Renesas M7003B has a typical android UI with common apps on it, though it keeps popping out an option, choosing ADWLuancher EX or Launcher. Normally, I will choose Launcher, since there is no much differences between these two.

The capacitive screen with fairly good resolution renders sensitive response and delicate picture quality.
I have really expected high before I get started my review but always prepared for disappointment. Though boasting a dual-core processor, it doesn’t have performed so satisfactorily in terms of video and audio playback. But it enables a relatively fast speed when it comes to webpage loading. Online flash playback looks much smooth.
All in all, though it doesn’t bring surprise to me. The performance of this dual-core tablet seems on the same level with single core of Samsung PV 210, Freescale iMX515. So a dual-core does not guarantee everything if the frequencies for single core cannot get increased substantially.
